HealthDay - MONDAY, July 7 (HealthDay News) -- The widely prescribed class ofantidepressants known as SSRIs may be associated with bleeding in theupper gastrointestinal tract, especially when taken with painkillerscalled nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, a new study says.

However, due to the Modern diet, most of us do not eat foods as healthy as these on a consistent basis anymore, which has led to the rise of omega-3 supplements playing a valuable role in maintaining health for modern day man living in the Western world.

With all of these benefits, it's hard to believe there can be any negatives of omega-3 supplements. Granted, there aren't many, but there are some things you should be aware of.

The first is that one of the benefits of omega-3's can also be one of its potential harms. This is omega-3's property as a blood thinner (anti-coagulant) just like aspirin or some prescription drugs, often taken to thin the blood to prevent heart attacks. However, for some people with certain health conditions, too much thinning of the blood can lead to excessive bleeding.

So, if you are already on a blood thinner, make sure you talk to your doctor about both the positives and negatives of omega-3 supplements.

If you have any allergy to fish or seafood, there is also a chance you may be allergic to fish oils, which are the best source of omega-3 supplements. However, this is something you probably already know about yourself.

Other negatives of omega-3 supplements are relatively minor and fall in the inconvenient category, such as fishy burps after taking the products, possible diarrhea, or upset stomach. These things can be reduced by cutting back on the dosage if you're taking too much, or taking the product with a meal and not on an empty stomach.

In the end, talk to your doctor and listen to your body for side effects. The benefits of omega-3 supplements far outweigh the negatives for most people so you should not be turned off just because there are some potential downsides. There are with anything you may take, prescription or natural.
